The Subaru Outback has come a long way from its humble beginnings. It originally started as an optional variant of the since-discontinued Legacy wagon. Fitted with some protective body cladding and a slightly raised suspension, the Legacy Outback offered a bit more versatility and capability away from the asphalt—something that proved surprisingly popular among outdoorsy types. So, Subaru struck the still-hot iron and further emphasized Outback's off-road prospects, eventually spinning it off into its own nameplate. Billed as the World's First Sport Utility Wagon, Outback would become a key component of Subaru's transition to the adventurous brand we know today.

Subaru is again taking Outback to a new level with the 2022 Wilderness™ trim level. It's the most rugged and capable Outback ever, and you can get it for yourself here at Maita Subaru in Sacramento. Here's a quick rundown of the highlights:

More Clearance

With standard features like 8.7-inches of ground clearance, Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive, and X-MODE advanced traction management, the standard Subaru Outback is already one of the segment's most capable models. The all-new Wilderness™ trim expands on these attributes, elevating ground clearance to 9.5 inches with purpose-tuned suspension for improved all-terrain stability while retaining Outback's signature on-road comfort. Additionally, redesigned bumpers provide increased approach, departure, and breakover angles.

Enhanced Traction

Outback Wilderness™ receives a special dual-function X-MODE system with additional settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. A revised final drive ratio (4.44:1) delivers more available low-end torque. And the exclusive matte-black 17-inch alloy wheels come wrapped in Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires. There's even a standard full-size spare stored under the cargo area.

More Power

The Outback Wilderness™ is motivated by a potent 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine (260 horsepower, 277 pound-feet of torque), giving it a max towing capacity of 3,500 pounds.

Ready for the Outdoors

Subaru envisioned the Outback Wilderness™ being used with a rooftop tent. So, it added a fixed ladder-type roof rack system with a static load limit of 700 pounds. And thanks to the water-repellant StarTex upholstery and standard all-weather floor mats, you won't have to worry if your adventures get a little dirty.
